A filter for seep liquid

  • a biochemical filter for liquid separated on the bottom of the dry toilet
  • after treatment the liquid can be conducted directly to the nature
  • no electricity supply required
  • the purification capacity of the filter masses is about 60 l of seep liquid

The unit must be used and maintained in accordance with the instructions, and its operation must be monitored regularly. Seep liquid created in a dry toilet can be conducted into the filter. Concerning use of the toilet, the instructions of the toilet unit’s manufacturer apply.

The following must not be routed into the filter: wastewater from a water toilet, grey washing water, rain or storm water, drainage water from foundations.

Follow-up of the operation

The operation of the filter must be followed monthly during the operating season. If the filter is operating well, it hardly smells at all or smells only slightly unpleasant. It is normal for a thin crust to be created on the surface of the liquid.

Check that

  1. The liquid level in the third compartment extends to the lowest point of the outlet pipe.
  2. The surface of the liquid in the second compartment is level with the overflow wall.
  3. The mass in the third compartment is loose. Crush and mix the mass using, for example, a thin metal pin.
  4. The exit of the liquid from the filter is unobstructed.
  5. The air grates in the filter cover are in place and the airflow is unobstructed.
  6. The visible connections of the sewers are in order.
  7. The water leaving the filter is clear but slightly yellowy.
  8. The pH-value of the liquid leaving the filter is at least nine. Dip the end of the pH-paper into the liquid coming out of the filter. Compare the colour of the paper with the table in the paper box. After use, put the paper into mixed waste. Replace the filter masses, as necessary

Winter storage

The filter masses can be left inside the filter over the winter. Their freezing does not damage the unit.
The masses must, however, be thawed out before conducting seep liquid to them.

Changing the filter material

The filter can purify up to 60 litres of seep liquid. After this the masses must be changed. Check whether the masses need to be changed, measuring the pH-value of the outlet liquid, using a pH-paper. The pH-value of the liquid must be at least nine. Only filter masses specifically intended for the Biolan Suotis may be used as filter materials. Biolan Oy does not guarantee the purification capacity of the unit if any other filter material is used.

  • Change the filter material in all of the compartments at the same time.
  • Disconnect the inlet pipe for the liquid from the lead-through.
  • Tilt the filter so that a part of the liquid in the third compartment exits through the outlet pipe.
  • Disconnect the outlet pipe as required.
  • Lift up the filter and empty the masses with liquid into a garden compost. You can use the filter masses as such as soil conditioner on ornamental plants. The masses and the liquid in the filter are rich in nutrients. Therefore, observe a safe distance to the bodies of water, when utilising them.
  • Put the filter back in place after emptying.
  • Connect the inlet and outlet pipes.
  • Put new mass batches in their respective compartments. At each compartment, a marking I, II or III can be found on the outside at the upper part of the filter. The labels of the filter mass bags bear the same symbols. Fill compartment II first.
  • Level the surface of the mass.
  • Check that the filter is in a horizontal position both lengthwise and laterally.

To be installed horizontally

Place the filter on an even, firm surface, not susceptible to frost. The filter must be in a horizontal position both lengthwise and laterally so as to allow the liquid flow to smoothly utilize the entire cleaning surface area of the filter materials. Install the filter so that the air can flow through the air grates in the cover into the filter.

Connect the pipe coming from the toilet to the lead-through rubber in the first compartment. Ensure a sufficient gradient (at least 1–1,5%), when installing the inlet pipe. Connect the outlet pipe to the lead-through rubber in the third compartment. Also when installing the outlet pipe, make sure that the gradient is sufficient to allow the liquid to flow without obstruction to the discharge point.

If the purifier is to be used in winter, the inlet sewer must be insulated. Whether the outlet sewer needs to be insulated shall be considered case by case.

Putting the filter material in place

The filter material is packed in plastic bags for transportation. Remove the plastic bags. At each compartment, a marking I, II or III can be found on the outside at the upper part of the filter. The bag labels bear the same symbols.

NOTE! Place the mass into compartment II first (two bags). Finally, level the surface of the mass.

The Biolan Suotis is a filter intended for the treatment of seep liquid created in a dry toilet. The operation of the filter is based on physical, chemical and biological filtration. The liquid flows from one compartment of the filter to another by gravity. The unit contains three different types of filter material.

  • In the first compartment the filter material is Biolan Filter Sand, which filters solid impurities from the liquid. A layer of micro-organisms, which use the organic matter in the liquid as their nutrition, is created on the surface of the sand.
  • The Massa-N in the second compartment binds ammonium nitrogen from the liquid.
  • At the final stage, the liquid flows through the phosphorus removal mass, the Massa-P.

The circulation of air inside the filter is natural. For ventilation the cover of the unit is fitted with four grates. The body of the filter is made of frost-resistant materials.

The capacity of the Biolan Suotis is sufficient for treating about 60 litres of seep liquid. After this, the masses need to be changed in accordance with the maintenance instructions. Depending on the toilet model and the frequency of use, the nutrient contents of the seep liquid may vary.

Provided that the filter is installed in accordance with the instructions, it has the capacity to make the seep liquid so clean that it can be conducted directly into the soil.
